Framework for Internet Safety Integration For the Middle Schools

Framework for Internet Safety Integration

For the Middle Schools

Goal: Protect our young people from online dangers

Objective: Each middle school student will gain understanding and be able to synthesize information from all four areas at each grade level.

Strategy: Core teams will ensure that lessons integrate information to address each of the following area:

Personal Safety

Cyber Bullying

Copyright

Source Evaluation.

Each core grade level teacher will be responsible for teaching one Internet Safety lesson per school year. This can be a collaborative lesson.

Exploratory and health/PE teams may implement a lesson to address all four areas as they apply to their curricula.

This year we would like you to focus on the curriculum area that applies most in your classroom. Example:

English & Math >> Source Evaluation or Copyright

Science, Civics, and History >> Cyber bulling

Exploratory, Resources >> Personal Safety

Now if you have a great lesson that you have been using, please continue with it even if it’s not in the suggested area. We are seeing a need to re-teach Source Evaluation and Copyright since these are where we are seeing the most issues at this time. We realize that all these areas apply to all students, but looking at the areas with the most emphasis, personal safety has been covered the most since it’s the one “in the news”.

Remember: Focus on the objective on the lesson, not the time involved.

SchoolMessenger Outreach

Amherst County Public Schools (ACPS) has recently implemented a new school notification system called SchoolMessenger. SchoolMessenger is fully integrated with the Parent Portal in PowerSchool. You will need to log into the Parent Portal to update your contact information and set your preferences for how you would like to be contacted in situations such as weather closings or for other notifications. If you do not have Parent Portal access, you will need visit your child’s school(s) with a photo ID for your PowerSchool Parent Portal login credentials. Please visit the following webpage to access the Parent Portal: www.amherst.k12.va.us and click the Parent Portal link located on the left of the page.

**Please remember to update your information as things change such as home phone numbers, cell phone numbers and email address.**

We hope that this new tool will provide another opportunity for efficient communication.  Feel free to contact your student’s school if you need further assistance registering for the Parent Portal; or contact Lavonne Mawyer at lmawyer@amherst.k12.va.us or 946-9340 x9562.

SMS Text Messaging Requirements

SchoolMessenger requires each phone number that will receive a text message to first opt-in. You can opt-in ahead of time (see below) or wait for the opt-in text message once we enable the texting function. There are only two requirements for a recipient to receive messages from ACPS via SMS text: an opt-in confirmation receipt sent from the recipient’s wireless device and the recipient’s wireless number imported into your SchoolMessenger account. Your wireless number should be automatically imported to your SchoolMessenger account once we enable the texting function.

Opt-in Device Confirmation

Each mobile device number(s) that recipients wish to receive text messages on must be opted into the SchoolMessenger service. This is as simple as texting an opt-in keyword – Yes or Y being the most commonly used – to the SchoolMessenger short code 68453.

The wireless carriers require that common short code providers have the capability to verify that a particular phone number did indeed agree to allow you to send them text messages. The recipient’s text of Yes or Y to the SchoolMessenger short code is this verification.

Information about the ACPS App

Amherst County Public Schools now has an App for both Apple and Android devices. Search your App Store for “Amherst County Public Schools” and you should find it. Among other things, the App will allow us to send you push notifications in addition to phone calls, texts, and emails.

About the new School Websites

Dear Parents, Staff and Community,

Welcome to the new ACPS School Websites! Why the change you might ask? For our parents and guardians the plan is to make the school websites uniform and similar in layout. The thought behind this is if a parent has children in more than one school they can easily navigate across multiple sites when looking for the same information. It has been years since the launch of the old sites and it is time for a new look and feel.

For our teachers, when they return in the fall, the Tech Department will have built all the webpages for teachers and pre-populated most of the required information. Teachers will only have to add a few pieces of information to meet the Teacher Webpage Guidelines outlined by Dr. Rogers. Teachers will be free to use Moodle, Weebly, etc. as their webpage as long as the required information is present. The Tech Department will be looking for helpdesk tickets in the fall should you decide to use your own service instead of Drupal. All accounts will be created, and many other tasks, will be handled by the Tech Department freeing up time for staff in the schools.

Teachers, be sure to watch the training videos we have created so you can get the required information on your webpage up-to-date. You can find those under the Staff tab and then Training Videos.
